Aiseirigh nan Gaidheal ...the Awakening Gaels

On the air since 1995, ANG, hosted by Geoffrey May and Rebecca-Lynne MacDonald-May, is an eclectic mix, broadcasting the language and the music of the Gaels as it has been in antiquity and in its new forms.

The MacDonald-Mays live in Margaree Harbour, Inverness County, on the west coast of Cape Breton Island.

Rebecca-Lynne is descended from settlers who came to Cape Breton Island in the early 19th century from the Hebrides and Highlands. Geoffrey's Highland ancestors left Scotland in 1650 arriving in Cape Breton Island 324 years later.

When we began to learn about Gaelic language, and culture our exposure to Gaelic song was limited. Attending a milling song workshop lead by Seumas Watson at the Gaelic College was a revelation. We had one of those "why didn't anyone tell us" moments. Several years later when CKJM started in nearby Cheticamp we had the opportunity to tell everyone about Gaelic songs. Rebecca-Lynne's father, Andy MacDonald, was a popular radio announcer at CJCB in Sydney, giving Rebecca-Lynne a love of radio. We began as volunteer hosts during early special events broadcasts, and have been with the station since.

Fans of a cappella traditional Gaelic singing we also enjoy recent compositions and treatments of the songs, especially Runrig, Mary Jane Lamond, and Capercaillie, as well as modern instrumental approaches to Highland music, like Wolfstone, The Peat Bog Faries and Daimh. We enjoy mixing our sets with the best of tradition and innovation.

Last spring as part of the 2001 Highlands and Islands Summer Series, Seumas Watson, Frances MacEachen, Colin Watson, Alice Freeman, Willie Francis Fraser and Coisir an Eillean came to the Marcel Doucet Studio at CKJM  and recorded  songs for our show. These tracks, along with technically rougher field recordings are the gems of our shows and testaments in themselves to the generous and lively spirit of the Gaels.
